Order of the Silver Crescent for Catalina de Valencia (February 2020)

I really wanted a historically-inspired text for this scroll because the recipient’s persona is from 16th century Spain. The challenge was adapting the text to a secular context while keeping the sense of effusive praise, humility, and gratitude in the original. I was thrilled to be able to write these words for my friend.

The original exemplar for the art on this scroll is wordy, really, really wordy. I delivered a piece that met the requested word count, but the artist came back to request even more. I had to find a way to smoothly integrate about 150 more words into a finished text without disturbing the flow of ideas or sounding too overblown.
*********************

Catalina de Valencia has come to Our attention most favorably. Let all hear these words and know from this day forward that We, Margarita de’ Siena, inspirational Queen of the East Kingdom, have seen that she is a gentle who gives herself to service. The purity and strength of her love for the East is not the fabric of her imagination, for she proves it by her works. Furthermore, on no account has she kept within narrow bounds. Rather, she has sought many ways in which to apply her talent and skill.

She serves locally, for the rapier community is enriched by her leadership as Fencing Marshal of Dragonship Haven and by the multiple times she has been marshal in charge for events and demonstrations. She serves the Kingdom, for the Crown has twice come to the St. Eligius Arts and Sciences competition when she was the event steward. In her several tours as a deputy leader of the Queen’s Guard, she has traveled the length and breadth of the Kingdom to ensure that everything her Queen needed was ready.

Equally important as what Catalina does is the way in which she does it. Whether on the fencing list field or running an event, she directs others with confidence, clarity, and consideration. She is guided both by her eye for detail and her understanding of the bigger picture. Because of her balanced perspective, Catalina is effective because she leads by example, takes on difficult tasks, and shares praise for her team generously.

We value what she has done in, and for, the East. Having consulted certain persons on this point, therefore do We, Margarita, induct Catalina de Valencia into Our Order of the Silver Crescent, done by Our hand at Queen and Crown’s Arts and Sciences Championship, on this 29th day of February, Anno Societatis LIV, in the Barony of Dragonship Haven.

Court Barony for Kassir Ni Deoraine (February 2020)

This is a scroll for a friend who really loves DisneyWorld. Getting the acrostic for MinneMouse to come out correctly was challenging! Luckily, the original exemplar called for a series of short lines in the middle of the scroll, so I could play around with letter counts until the acrostic came out evenly. I was delighted to write these words for my friend.
****************************************

Pay heed, populace of the East, and hear of one who has dedicated herself to making ours a magical Kingdom for all. We, Queen Margarita, have seen the love that Kassir Ni Deoraine brings to her many acts of service. For years, she has nurtured the beloved youth of Our Kingdom as chancellor of minors, developing their understanding of honor, art, and service. She has helped those in need of mental health assistance. Her art of hair sewing has adorned lovely locks across our land.

Many have praised her
Inspiring skills; she
Never pauses when others
Need support or kindness.
Indeed, reports from all
Event royal liaisons
Mention gratitude for her
Open communication and
Up-to-date information.
So much love for the
East and its people.

For her belief in, and service to, the East do We make Kassir Ni Deoraine a Baroness of Our Court, on 29 February, 2020, A.S. LIV at Queen’s and Crown’s Arts & Sciences Championship, in Our Barony of Dragonship Haven.

Order of the Silver Tyger for Timbrien (November 2019)

A backlog scroll prepared for Quintavia’s Iron Scribe event, to help reduce the backlog in the Tyger Clerk of the Signet’s office. Timbrien’s knight advised me that her name means “builder.”
*****************************

All who hear Our words shall know that We, Ôzurr and Fortune, King and Queen of the great East Kingdom, treasure the ferocity of Our fighters. One such warrior is a builder in all that she does. Of her skills, fearless, fast, and fading never. Of teamwork on the field, first to enter and last to leave. Of the next generation of fighters, devoted to Dragon Claw. Of joy and ready laughter. For the many ways in which Timbrien of la Familia Gladiatoria builds her communities do We induct her into the Order of the Silver Tyger. Done at Our Great Court at the 48th Pennsic War, 4 August 2019, Anno Societatas LIV.

Order of the Silver Tyger for Theobald Kendric (November 2019)

A backlog scroll prepared for Quintavia’s Iron Scribe event, to help reduce the backlog in the Tyger Clerk of the Signet’s office. After Theobald fought the King’s triad at Balfar’s Challenge, His Majesty called the Order to the field to immediately induct Theobald into the Order of the Silver Tyger.
*****************************

Witness, citizens of the East, the deeds of a mighty fighter. On this day, We, King Ôzurr and Queen Fortune, extol Theobald Kendric’s determination to take the field at the marshal’s call and his willingness to engage three combatants against one, as his teammates had yet to arrive. So fiercely did he fight and lay waste to his opponents that the King Himself called Theobald to fight in singles, just they two. Challenge accepted, Theobald bested the King in one of their three bouts. So inspired are We by this excellence that We have called the Order of the Silver Tyger upon the field to greet Theobald Kendric, their newest companion. Done this day at Balfar’s Challenge in the Barony of Dragonship Haven, 27 April 2019, Anno Societatas LIII.

Order of the Tygers Cub for Richard de Marr’ (September 2019)

A scroll for an Eastern youth
***************************

Hear, Eastern populace, of the future of Our mighty Kingdom. We, Ôzurr and Fortune, Rex et Regina Orientalis, have learned of a young man, Richard de Marr’, who has earned wide word fame. He has been youth Baronial Champion for his prowess with rattan. He competes in arts and sciences by making non-alcoholic cordials and is generous with his art. He serves diligently with camp set up and tear down. For thus distinguishing himself thrice over do We make Richard a member of the Order of the Tyger’s Cub.

Done on this day in Barony of Endewearde, at the Investiture of their Coronets, 21 September 2019, Anno Societatas LIV.

Order of the Pelican for Magnus de Londres (September 2019)

This is my first wordsmithing for a Peerage scroll. Magnus has done much to develop and promote the Thrown Weapons community and has a Norse persona, so I read the Poetic Eddas for inspiration. This is based on Helgakvitha Hundingsbana I.
************************************

Be it known that We, Ôzurr and Fortune, Rex et Regina Orientalis, have heard great praise for Magnus de Londres.

Mighty he threw |and three Queens Magnus served,
When Thrown Weapons | Champion he was;
Marshal he did, | the hardy throwers
Who long had hurled | o’er Eastern lands.

Short time for war | then next he sought
Cord and signs, | the lifeblood of Pennsic;

He led his staff, | and efficient ways
For tech services | did further gain.

Magnus did not | the Kingdom fail,
No lack in his service | did the Crown get;
Truly, We say, | and justly informed
Of his Pelican ways| We witness

And so, do We elevate Magnus de Londres to the Order of the Pelican, done by Our hand at St. Andrews Crosses the Alps, in the Barony of An Dubhaigeainn, 28 September, A.S. LIV.

Best Novice Kit, Novice Day, Rusted Woodlands (July 2019)

Duke Brennan asked me to scribe the words for this scroll, to be awarded to the heavy list fighter with the best kit at the Shire of Rusted Woodlands’ Novice Day event.

This was the first time I’ve composed words for an unknown recipient. Because I couldn’t focus on the person receiving it, I highlighted why a heavy list fighter’s kit makes a difference beyond its protective function.

***********************************************

Armored combat is thrilling to watch, especially when combatants’ kits evoke a medieval aura. Attention to detail in armor and garb reflects a fighter’s pursuit of excellence in all aspects of this martial discipline. A new fighter who has made notable progress in representing a particular time and culture is most praiseworthy.

And so, the award for Best Kit goes to (blank)

Given this day at East Kingdom Novice Day, by the Shire of Rusted Woodlands, 20 July 2019, Anno Societatas LIV.

Award of Arms for Caitilín ingen Donndubáin (May 2019)

Another assignment close to my heart – the words for our daughter’s Award of Arms.

Her persona is Celt-Viking, so I researched early medieval Irish poetry for a source text. As it turns out, a lot of the early medieval Irish poetry that’s available online is about war, lists of warriors who are X, son of Y, son of Z (ad infinitum), and accounts of their fierceness in war and/or their gruesome deaths. Or about the fierce love and tragic death of a couple.

None of this hit the right tone.

Luckily, I found a praise poem, the Leinster Dynastic poem “Lugh of the Shield.” I kept as much of the original wording as I could, and kept changes within the rhythm of the translation. Capturing the range of her participation in a few lines was a difficult challenge.

Hearing my words read aloud for our daughter was very emotional. It’s an important reminder to strive to create words that fit the recipient as closely as I can.
********************************

Hear Our words, populace of the mighty East Kingdom, that you may know that We, King Ôzurr and Queen Fortune, have heard great report of Caitilín ingen Donndubáin.

Lass of the bow and axe, bright
spirit—there is none under
the heavens as fierce as the daughter
of Sigurthr and Medhbh.

A maiden taller than many,
a firm hand ministering the lists,
dedicated and from dedicated lineage,
is this child of Duchy Drachenklaue.

Therefore, We are pleased to award arms to Caitilín and make her a Lady of Our Court. To wit: Vert semy of roses Or, on a chief argent an arrow reversed purpure. Done on this day in the Barony of Smoking Rocks, at the Baronial Investiture and King’s and Queen’s Rattan Championship, 29 June 2019, Anno Societatas LIV.

Order of the Silver Tyger for Eric von Boulder (April 2019)

This was the last in the batch of wordsmithing assignments to prepare for the scribal event to ease the Tyger Signet’s backlog of scrolls. Duke Balfar and Eric’s knight, Sir Torrin, advised me about his weapons forms and service.

***********************************

Let Our voices carry across the East Kingdom as We, Wilhelm and Vienna, König and Königin, speak of Eric von Boulder. A fighter for three years with Clan Ochoda, Eric wields multiple weapons forms, with skill in sword and shield, two weapons, and polearm. Not content with honing his own craft, Eric also supports others through teaching and making equipment. Therefore, We are moved to induct him into the Order of the Silver Tyger. We further charge Eric with seeking out the other martial orders and deepening his knowledge.

Done by Our hand at Our Bardic Championship and the Investiture of their Excellencies of Dragonship Haven, on the 23rd of February, Anno Societatis LIII, in the Barony of Dragonship Haven.
