The East’s Order of High Merit for service. The recipient’s persona is from 14th century Hamburg, so I used the German poetic form called Minnesang. The words include references to Martin’s unofficial status as the Mayor of Helpful Town and as the organizer of kids’ activities including a monster hunt & chase at Carolingia’s annual autumn event, Falling Leaves.

The recipient has recently served both as Court Herald and as the Sovereign’s Champion of Arts & Sciences, chosen for his bardic work. His persona is Welsh, but since he has adapted portions of The Mabinogion as both stories and songs, I was utterly intimidated to likewise adapt a passage for his scroll. I did, however, focus on using kennings and alliteration, which are common in the Welsh epic.

Tune your ears, dear East, and hear of Gavin Kent’s vocal artistry as both Bard and Herald. With great skill, he graces the Kingdom with stories and poems and songs. This son of Penarth seeks subjects in his local lore, looking often to the Mabinogion. Chosen as Champion, he has excelled in entertaining all, lest empty air cloud the Court. Commissioned by a Countess to celebrate Crown Tournament by Rapier, Gavin composed and first performed his Ode when she was Queen once again. 
Crown and crowd alike pay heed when Gavin serves as Herald. His voice carries to the corners of every hall, hailing those called forth. Gavin is humble, in keeping with one called Pennaeth. Yet We, Culann and Ro Honig, King and Queen of the East Kingdom, wish him to know that he is high in Our esteem. Therefore We are pleased to make him a Baron of Our Court. Done by Our decree this day at Pennsic War LIII, Anno Societatis LXI.

The East’s Order of High Merit for service. The recipient has a Welsh persona, so I really wanted to include the Welsh epic, The Mabinogion. I chose a passage based on the image from the C&I scribe, a paper cutwork image of Atlas bearing the boulder of the world upon his shoulders.

But We, King Donovan and Queen Meghanta, see Lawrence Vaughan’s continued acts of service. At many events, both for Kingdom and Barony, for many people, both the general populace and candidates at their vigils, he prepares food that is at once delicious and plentiful. Therefore do We induct Lawrence Vaughan into the Order of the Silver Crescent, done by Our Hand at the 46th Bhakail Yule Revel, in Our Barony of Bhakail.

The East’s Order of High Merit fort Service. Vargus is a long-time friend in our Haus who’s well-known for his feast cooking. I used Poetic Edda, “Hymiskvitha,” stanza 1 for inspiration and rhymed “kitchen” & “bitchin” with the enthusiastic blessing of his spouse.

Dear to the East Kingdom are those who give of themselves for the benefit of others. The Crown has heard great acclaim for Gonzalo Corneille’s many deeds of service. Although the Flying Terrapin brought him here only 7 years ago, Gonzalo has quickly become part of the fabric of the Kingdom. He holds multiple offices, as Marshal of Fence and keeper of both Bergental’s history and its modern communications. His work bolsters baronies, both his home group of Bergental and his neighbors Beyond the Mountain. Stewards know that Gonzalo will be there before their events start and after most of the crew has returned home. He nails the details, whether he is teaching a class, tracing Bergental’s court records, or lending his sword in the Queen’s hour of need. We can truly say that his service has immeasurably eased the daily administration not only of private persons but also branches and the East Kingdom. And therefore do We, Tindal and Emerson, King and King Consort of the East, induct Gonzalo Corneille into Our Order of the Silver Crescent. A service award for a gentle who works in diverse ways to support her home branch, the Barony of Stonemarche.

This is our daughter’s first service award. I am co-premier of the Order of the Silver Wheel, and Caitilín is the first 2nd-generation member of the Order. Isobel is a house-sister in Lockwood Manor. She lives in the furthest reaches of the East Kingdom, in the Barony of Ruantallan, where she works in many roles to support the Society. She has also traveled to the Kingdom of Drachenwald to attend and support events there. She has a Norse persona, so I adapted “Alvissmol” from the Poetic Eddas.

This Chivalry for BillyFish is my first for someone who’d received a previous scroll that I’d wordsmithed. Since his Silver Crescent, he has grown ever-deeper in my heart. Being inducted into the Order of Chivalry was particularly meaningful for my Haus-brother, who’d pursued a heavy list path for a long time. Inspired by Fish’s actual military service and persona as a Varangian solider, I adapted The Life of St. Romylos, by Gregory of Constantinople, translated by Mark Bartusis, Khalifa Ben Nasser, and Angeliki E. Laiou.

East, hear Us! Nothing is as worthy of Our Court as to transmit through writing the achievements one who has devoted his life to defense of Our lands. For when laudable actions are known, those who see them are inspired. And so it is with great honor that We laud one whose skilled leadership on the field is exemplary. His performance at Pennsic XLIX was a masterful display of ferocity and control, only the latest in a long career of such boldness. And so do We, Mohammad and Corotica, Crown of the East, induct Giles William Trout, called Billy Fish, into Our Order of the Chivalry. Dafydd’s persona is Welsh, so I took the opportunity to revisit The Mabinogion and adapt “Manawyddan the Son of Llyr” (translated by Lady Charlotte Guest, 1877).

From board and brew to bees to baskets, from lap-harp and songs and stories to hoods from Skjoldeham, Dafydd o Llyn Cwellyn makes as was made by his ancestors.

And so, do We, Mohammad and Corotica, Crown of the East, induct Magister Dafydd o Llyn Cwellyn into Our Order of the Silver Brooch. Done by Our Hand, in Our Court at East Kingdom Twelfth Night, January 7, Anno Societatas LVII.

I was honored to write these words for my first protégé, who’d committed to wear my belt just a month before. Although she’d discovered the Society only a few years before, Maegwynn quickly became a steady and skilled organizer. For a 10th century persona with a primarily Viking heritage, I adapted the general style and alliteration pattern of the Poetic Eddas.

Cassian is a heavy list fighter with a Roman persona, so I adapted The AEneid, Book I, lines 1-12 for this scroll

This scroll is close to my heart. I was the East Kingdom’s Seneschal at the time, and Emerson is my 7th-generation ancestor in the office. Long a Pelican, a fixture both in his Barony of Concordia of the Snows and on the Pennsic staff, finding suitable words to reflect this honor and fitting them into the form of an English sonnet to reflect his persona was difficult, but fun!

Devillin is a friend in Duchy VDK with a 16th century Scottish persona. He had served on the Queen’s Guard for multiple reigns as well as working to support and develop the East’s fencing community. This scroll presented the challenge of keeping the tone of praise from the original poem, William Dunbar’s “Eulogy to Bernard Stewart, Lord of Aubigny,” while avoiding the occasion of mourning. I am especially glad that I could keep the original poem’s acrostic, in the second stanza.

Caelia is a house-sister in Lockwood Manor. Although Caelia herself is quiet, her service is essential for making key events in her home branch, the Barony of the Bridge, run smoothly. She was Duchess Avelina’s second-in-command for planning the East Kingdom’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. Since Caelia’s persona is 12th century English, I based the text on a letter from Eleanor of Aquitaine.

I really wanted a historically-inspired text for this scroll because the recipient’s persona is from 16th century Spain. The challenge was adapting the text to a secular context while keeping the sense of effusive praise, humility, and gratitude in the original. I was thrilled to be able to write these words for my friend.

The original exemplar for the art on this scroll is wordy, really, really wordy. I delivered a piece adapted from The Interior Castle (1588), by Saint Teresa of Avila that met the requested word count, but the artist came back to request even more. I had to find a way to smoothly integrate about 150 more words into a finished text without disturbing the flow of ideas or sounding too overblown.

Catalina de Valencia has come to Our attention most favorably. Let all hear these words and know from this day forward that We, Margarita de’ Siena, inspirational Queen of the East Kingdom, have seen that she is a gentle who gives herself to service. The purity and strength of her love for the East is not the fabric of her imagination, for she proves it by her works. Furthermore, on no account has she kept within narrow bounds. Rather, she has sought many ways in which to apply her talent and skill.

She serves locally, for the rapier community is enriched by her leadership as Fencing Marshal of Dragonship Haven and by the multiple times she has been marshal in charge for events and demonstrations. She serves the Kingdom, for the Crown has twice come to the St. Eligius Arts and Sciences competition when she was the event steward. In her several tours as a deputy leader of the Queen’s Guard, she has traveled the length and breadth of the Kingdom to ensure that everything her Queen needed was ready.

Equally important as what Catalina does is the way in which she does it. Whether on the fencing list field or running an event, she directs others with confidence, clarity, and consideration. She is guided both by her eye for detail and her understanding of the bigger picture. Because of her balanced perspective, Catalina is effective because she leads by example, takes on difficult tasks, and shares praise for her team generously.

We value what she has done in, and for, the East. Having consulted certain persons on this point, therefore do We, Margarita, induct Catalina de Valencia into Our Order of the Silver Crescent, done by Our hand at Queen and Crown’s Arts and Sciences Championship, on this 29^th day of February, Anno Societatis LIV, in the Barony of Dragonship Haven.

This is my first wordsmithing for a Peerage scroll. Magnus has done much to develop and promote the East Kingdom’s Thrown Weapons community and has a Norse persona, so I read the Poetic Eddas for inspiration. This is based on Helgakvitha Hundingsbana I.

Mighty he threw |and three Queens Magnus served,
When Thrown Weapons | Champion he was;

Short time for war | then next he sought
Cord and signs, | the lifeblood of Pennsic;

He led his staff, | and efficient ways
For tech services | did further gain.  

Magnus did not | the Kingdom fail,
No lack in his service | did the Crown get;

Another assignment close to my heart – the words for our daughter’s Award of Arms.

Her persona is Celt-Viking, so I researched early medieval Irish poetry for a source text. As it turns out, a lot of the early medieval Irish poetry that’s available online is about war, lists of warriors who are X, son of Y, son of Z (ad infinitum), and accounts of their fierceness in war and/or their gruesome deaths. Or about the fierce love and tragic death of a couple.

None of this hit the right tone.

Luckily, I found a praise poem, the Leinster Dynastic poem “Lugh of the Shield.” I kept as much of the original wording as I could, and kept changes within the rhythm of the translation. Capturing the range of her participation in a few lines was a difficult challenge.

Hearing my words read aloud for our daughter was very emotional. It’s an important reminder to strive to create words that fit the recipient as closely as I can.

Bianca’s EK Wiki page describes her persona as a Venetian of the late 15^th century, so I wanted to compose a Petrarchan sonnet – an Italian style of sonnet divided into an octet (8 lines) and sestet (6 lines) with a specific rhyme scheme. The octet typically lays out the poem’s problem, and the sestet presents the solution. Here, the “problem,” so to speak, is the set of Bianca’s activities in the Society, and the “solution” is to award her arms.

That Kenric, King, and Avelina, Queen
Know Bianca di Alessandro’s mien
And are much pleaséd with her many deeds.
Mosaic Herald helping those who need
Arms passed, a conduit, she is, between

His persona is Anglo-Saxon, so I used kennings and crafted words to fit the capital initial letters of key lines in the scribe’s referent document (here rendered in boldface for contrast, although they were a larger font size on the scroll). The scroll has two panels, side-by-side.

As Shire seneschal and as its minister of Arts & Sciences, she has worked to ensure that her branch is strong. As combat archer and as coordinator of the East Kingdom Teen Party at Pennsic, her side-eye slays as mightily as her bolts. Queen then Countess, she is a Rose who inspires fierce loyalty and dedication. Welcoming and inclusive of all, she raises her voice in the name of fairness, so that others can find their joy, their home, their family in Our Society. She is the Eastern spirit.

We, Caoilfhionn and Brennan, Ardrígain and Ardrí of this great Kingdom, hear Our Order, whose words echo what we know in Our hearts to be true. It was at Pennsic XLIV that she was honored with the Order of Courtesy for her willingness to speak truth to power and make you smile all the while. Damhin was squired to Kenric and had had to step away from the SCA for a while due to health reasons. He was just starting to rebuild his strength and stamina when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all in-person events in the SCA. To keep up his progress, Damhin completed the 100 Days Pell Challenge. I am honored to have written these words for my Haus brother, whose path has been so difficult but whose commitment never wavered.

On this day, We, King Ôzurr and Queen Fortune, extol Theobald Kendric’s determination to take the field at the marshal’s call and his willingness to engage three combatants against one, as his teammates had yet to arrive. So fiercely did he fight and lay waste to his opponents that the King Himself called Theobald to fight in singles, just they two. Challenge accepted, Theobald bested the King in one of their three bouts. He has been youth Baronial Champion for his prowess with rattan. He competes in arts and sciences by making non-alcoholic cordials and is generous with his art. He serves diligently with camp set up and tear down. For thus distinguishing himself thrice over do We make Richard a member of the Order of the Tyger’s Cub.

Duke Brennan asked me to scribe the words for this scroll, to be awarded to the heavy list fighter with the best kit at the Shire of Rusted Woodlands’ Novice Day event.

This was the first time I’ve composed words for an unknown recipient. Because I couldn’t focus on the person receiving it, I highlighted why a heavy list fighter’s kit makes a difference beyond its protective function.

A fighter for three years with Clan Ochoda, Eric wields multiple weapons forms, with skill in sword and shield, two weapons, and polearm. In addition, I read various accounts of the diner; Emily Guendelsberger’s piece, “Reports from a Medieval War,” published in Philadelphia City Paper on August 14, 2014, was particularly helpful for understanding the diner’s special place at Pennsic.

Her warm spirit makes the Diner a welcome place to rest and refresh both body and mind. Her generosity and dedication attest to her deep bonds of friendship for the East and have a lasting effect for all who pass through the Gypsy Diner. The words for this Silver Tyger were the first of several in short succession to prepare for a scribal event in early March 2019 aimed specifically at reducing the Tyger Signet’s roster of backlog scrolls.

Johannes’ EK Wiki page says that his persona went to the Crusades with England’s King Edward, and Sir Cedric of Amorica shared his primary weapons forms with me, as well as telling me that Johannes is a left-handed fighter.

Let all within the sound of Our voice know that We, Tsar Ivan and Tsaritsa Matilde of the mighty East, have heard of Johannes filius Nicholai’s sinister skill, wielding both the war hammer and sword and shield in defense of Crown and Kingdom. This scroll was particularly special. Fish is my Haus brother and a dear friend whose counsel I’d relied on. He is a quiet, efficient leader and I was thrilled when Mistress Fiona asked me to do the words to honor Fish’s service.

Fish had been Duke Lucan’s squire for a long time and so worked a large number of royal reigns across the Kingdom. More recently, he had been Queen Caoilfhionn’s Captain of the Guard for three reigns in short succession. Master Sigurthr VigurHafn, one of Fish’s earliest squire brothers, helped to capture this sense of Fish as the Kingdom’s roadie, taking care of everything that needed doing behind the scenes so that the event, and Court, could go on.

This is a scroll for a friend who really loves DisneyWorld. Getting the acrostic for MinneMouse to come out correctly was challenging! Luckily, the original exemplar called for a series of short lines in the middle of the scroll, so I could play around with letter counts until the acrostic came out evenly. I was delighted to write these words for my friend.

When the assignment was first given to Mistress Saerlaith, she was told that Liadan likes musicals and would appreciate a few references to Hamilton worked into her scroll. Our daughter had received the soundtrack for her birthday a few months previous, and it had been on continuous play ever since, so Saerlaith asked if I’d do the words.

And I immediately knew I had to do a filk of “Ten Duel Commandments.”

With Their Majesties’ Caoilfhionn and Brennan’s permission for a scroll presentation with a high level of schtick, I tried to keep as much of the original wording as possible and alter the rest to fit the song’s cadence and spirit. Master Malcom Bowman, Royal Vox, rapped the scroll instead of reading it (and I giggled nearly uncontrollably throughout).

This was my first wordsmithing assignment, and there’s nothing quite like hearing your name in Court for contributing to an award for a friend.
