Silver Wheel with AoA for Tink of Babylon, awarded by Culann and Ro Honig III at Pennsic War LIII, July 2026.
The recipient has a Norse persona and was being recognized for her service in providing overdose safety training and supplies in the Bog at Pennsic. I chose this image of a valkyrie carrying a horn for its suggestion of hospitality. The original is gilded silver, so I tried to replicate that depth by painting a silver layer and then a bronze layer. The band at the bottom is in her favorite colors of pink, teal, and purple.

I’m really proud of how this scroll came out because it has so many firsts for me: the style of art, whitework, and Gothic Textura Quadrata hand. The scroll incorporates the recipient’s favorite color, teal, includes lilies (in the B) to honor her daughter, and incorporates her “forest witch” vibe with a crescent moon, ferns, oak leaves and acorns, and tiny mushrooms. (The twee mushrooms are my favorite part!). All of the outlining and detail work around the capital letters in the text are painted.

This was a last minute assignment, taking over for the original scribe who’d had Life Happen. Words were ready, but I had less than a week to do C&I. Recipient has a Greek persona, so I decided on a strong border, featuring a key meander in colors that evoke Greek pottery, with a center line of palms (also common on Greek pottery) to separate the English and French versions.
This was my first time doing this style of border, and I thought I’d borked it about halfway through, painting the orange in such a way that the black could not repeat. Luckily, with some sleep and clearer eyes, I was able to save the design and keep going.

This is my first piece from the Book of Kells, the first of this size & complexity, & my first A&S display/competition. Image is an M, from 191v.
Gouache on Bristol. My favorite part is that I used a blunt-ended toothpick as a stamp for the dots.

The recipient has a Norse persona, so I based the image on a copper alloy ship brooch, 800-1,000 AD, from the National Museum of Denmark (https://www.thejewelleryeditor.com/images/800-1050-ad-copper-alloy-ship-brooch-tjrnehj-ii-fyn-denmark-the-national-museum-of-denmark/). The shields on the ship are (L – R) the Barony of Carolingia, the recipient’s proposed arms, the badge for the Order of the Silver Rapier, the arms of Matthias Grunewald, the recipient’s Don, and the badge for the Carolingia Cavaliers.

This is my first scroll to go out live in Court, a last-minute addition to the docket for Bhakail Yule XLVI! Aislinn and I had a week for turn-around. Since the recipient’s persona is from medieval Sardinia, I chose the facade of the Basilica di Saccargia (https://www.italytravelandlife.com/culture/basilica-di-saccargia/).
